“My position had been terminated in July 2010. A few months later, during the time I was in transition, I met Dr. Colleen Georges at a local library where she offered seminars on resume writing, cover letters, and interviewing tips. I found the resume writing and cover letter seminar very helpful. I had a resume together at the time I attended the seminar so I was able to compare my resume format with Dr. Colleen’s format. Dr. Colleen was kind enough to take my resume and substitute my format with her resume formatting which really gave it a professional look! The one great piece of advice I took away from the resume writing and cover letter seminar was to use the same heading on both documents so that your “brand” is consistent. I also took Dr. Colleen’s suggestion and used on all the thank you letters I sent! The second seminar given by Dr. Colleen that I attended was on interviewing tips. At the time I attended, I hadn’t had any interviews so this seminar was perfect timing. Dr. Colleen covered several items such as how to prepare for the interview, common interview questions and how to respond to each question, illegal interview questions, and questions to ask during an interview. Following the seminar, Dr. Colleen distributed all the material covered so we would have it for reference. This material was invaluable as it became part of my preparation to review it before every phone screen and in person interview. The topics and the reference material Dr. Colleen provided were terrific, as I mentioned. Attending these seminars and having the reference material was a big boost to my confidence because it confirmed I was on the right path. The resume looked great after Dr. Colleen formatted it, the cover letters I knew I could put them together with a little practice, and the interview I would be OK by reviewing the material and thinking about my responses to interview questions ahead of time.
